Kikuletwa Hotspring Tour

Moshi
Half Day / Full Day
from $85 pp

Kikuletwa Hot Springs sits in the middle of African bush - a geothermal oasis where crystal-clear turquoise water stays warm year-round. No resorts. No crowds. Just an off-road drive through baobab trees and dry riverbeds to reach a pool of water that seems out of place in this landscape.

You swim in naturally warm water. Use the rope swing if you want adrenaline. Or float and do nothing. Tiny fish (Garra Rufa, called "doctor fish") will nibble dead skin off your feet - it's a free natural pedicure that happens to feel weird and tickle.

Half-day trip from Arusha (2 hours) or Moshi (1.5 hours). The drive is the adventure itself. The water is the reward.

Your Half-Day and Full-Day

Morning: Drive & Arrival (2 hours from Arusha)

Pickup from your hotel. Drive scenic route toward Moshi or deeper into Kilimanjaro region. You might see Mount Kilimanjaro depending on weather. Then the paved road ends. Off-road adventure begins - rugged track through bushland, dry riverbeds, baobab trees, acacia forest.

You pass local communities, see how people actually live in this region. The landscape feels untouched. By the time you reach the springs (after 2 hours driving), you've experienced Tanzania beyond tourist areas.

Midday: The Hotsprings (3–4 hours)

Arrive at the oasis. Crystal-clear turquoise water surrounded by green shade trees. You can swim freely in the warm water, use the rope swing for an adrenaline rush, wade and let doctor fish nibble your feet (natural pedicure), snorkel if you rent gear, sit under trees and do absolutely nothing, or spot turtles and catfish swimming naturally.

Most people spend 3–4 hours here. It's unstructured. You decide how to spend the time. This is the point - presence, not performance.

Afternoon: Return

Drive back to Arusha/Moshi (2 hours). You arrive mid-afternoon, tired and relaxed.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Kikuletwa from Arusha and Moshi? How long is the drive?

From Arusha: About 2 hours drive. From Moshi: About 1.5 hours. The drive is scenic (you might see Kilimanjaro), but the last part is off-road adventure on a rugged track through African bush. It's not a smooth highway - bring patience and enjoy the landscape. The rough terrain is part of the experience.

Is the water actually warm? Can we swim safely?

Yes, crystal-clear turquoise water that's naturally warm - it's geothermal. Completely safe to swim. You can dive in, use the rope swing for an adrenaline rush, or relax under the trees. Snorkeling gear is available (rental extra). The water depth varies, but wading and swimming are both possible depending on where you stand.

What are the "doctor fish"? Will they hurt us?

Garra Rufa fish (famous worldwide for spa treatments). They gently nibble away dead skin - it's a natural, free pedicure. You'll feel a slight tickle on your feet. It's not painful or harmful; it's part of the unique experience at Kikuletwa. Some people love it, some find it weird. Both reactions are normal.

Can we combine Kikuletwa with Materuni Waterfall tour? Is it worth it?

Yes. Full-day combo works well: morning at Materuni Waterfall (trek, swim, coffee experience), afternoon at Kikuletwa Hotsprings (swim, relax, doctor fish). Reduced rates apply for combining both. It's a long day (8+ hours) but covers two completely different natural experiences - waterfall and geothermal spring. Only do this if you want maximum activity.

Is this just a swimming/lounging tour or is there more?

Mostly swimming and relaxing. The drive to get there includes scenic African countryside, passing local communities and baobab trees. Snorkeling available if you want underwater exploration. Natural spa experience with doctor fish if you're into that. But the main draw is floating in turquoise hot water in the middle of nowhere. Don't expect structured activities or guided education.
